Active Soccer are delighted to report that one of our coaches and co-director of Active Soccer Cheshunt, has recently earned a first international cap, making her debut for Wales against Norway at the Algarve Cup in Portugal last month.
Having been called up for an international camp in Wales at the start of 2012, Sarah – who plays for Watford Ladies FC in the FA National Premier League - was then selected by Wales Womens International Team manager Jarmo Maitekainen in his 20 player squad to compete in the 2012 Algarve Cup. Wales managed to win two of their group matches against hosts Portugal and Hungary as well as a draw against Republic Of Ireland, to top their group and face Norway in the 7th place play off. Unfortunately for Sarah, clearance from FIFA didn’t arrive until just before the Norway match, so she was unable to play any part in the group matches, but she was finally able to start against Norway and gain her first senior cap for the country. Norway eventually ran out 3-0 winners in the match, but Wales showed a good account of themselves in the match against a team ranked around 30 places higher in the world rankings.
Sarah has since been selected for the Wales squad that travel to Caen at the beginning of April to play France in a European Championships qualifier. With France ranked even higher than Norway, this is sure to be another tough test!
Congratulations to Sarah from everyone at Active Soccer on a fantastic achievement and much reward for her hard work and commitment to her football.
