Rob McHugh

I started playing football when I was very young, playing for school and joining a local team at the age of ten. I went on to play as much football as I could. I had the pleasure of playing for a few local junior teams and then went to play for a local men’s team. I loved every minute of playing and could not wait to play again.

I studied Sports Development and Coaching at Northumbria University in Newcastle, developing my coaching skills, playing at University and back at home whenever the opportunity arose.

Since leaving University, I have been unfortunate to incur a knee injury that has stopped my playing days in the sport. This has allowed me to focus on the coaching side of football. I spent the summer coaching football in America, associating fun and games with learning, allowing the excitement and enthusiasm of the children to develop their game and my coaching skills. Coaching has become a huge part of my life as I love the sport and everything that is associated with it. Now I have the opportunity to encourage and promote the game in my local area. I hope I can allow everyone to enjoy the game as much as I did playing and as much I still do coaching.

‘My son has been with active soccer for 9 months in the under 7’s and thoroughly enjoys the sessions.  Active soccer continue to built his confidence in the sport and the training sessions are great for building the children's’ football skills, developing teamwork and encouraging sportsmanship.  The coach is very patient and extremely well liked amongst the children’.

Lancaster Active Cup Report

What a fantastic way to start Active Soccer in Lancaster! A dry and sunny, but cold Thursday afternoon at the University of Cumbria saw Moorside Primary, St. Luke’s and Bowerham battle it out to be crowned the Active Soccer Cup Champions.

The whole tournament was a complete success, with some amazing play from all three teams. The results where really close in many fixtures, especially a fantastic result by Skerton St Luke’s, being 2-0 down very early on but coming back to win 3 – 2 with almost the last kick of the game! This game showed real character and team work to fight back in this game.

As the matches between two of the teams where going on, the technique being displayed at the inflatable’s was unbelievable! The prizes been given away must have been a real inspiration to so many young guys and girls! Those free socks where flying!

After two rounds of games and all the results where in, we had a winning school, coming in with a fantastic 11 points, Moorside Primary School where crowned champions of the Lancaster Active Cup. The captain of the school team showed great leadership skills throughout the tournament, scoring goals and saving them when between the posts. The emphasis on team spirit and team play was the key to their success throughout the tournament.

A massive thank you is required to all the schools that took part in the event, especially the children who gave it their all, all afternoon. It was brilliant to see such effort, athleticism and passion in every game. There was also a great sportsmanship between the teams which is always good to see.

I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who made this possible, especially with transporting the children and the support shown on the sidelines throughout the afternoon.
